Getting Joy Back

Some days... life sucks...

Things don't go your way. People are nasty. Gas goes up ten cents over night. Your dog eats your homework. All that good stuff. The thing is, life is still going to go on whether you snap out of it or not. But sometimes it's much harder to get back on track. Sometimes, we all could use a little extra summthin'-summthin'. Something more than positive self-talk and affirmations.

The other morning, I woke up feeling like I was done feeling down from the night before. I could think of no better way to get my Sugar back than to jump on my Beach Cruiser and ride around town. I rode around the fountain. I rode to the coffee shop for my Americano. I rode around the rose bushes. The wind in my hair, the sun rising over the hills, and all the sounds of a world coming to life at 6:30 in the a.m. were fantastic! It was all I needed.

So when someone or some thing steals your joy, what do you do to get it back? I'd love to hear your comments or, if you prefer, vote at the poll on the right... right over there... yeah, that one. Go on... click away!

Depending on the time of year - driving the car on country roads, windows down (wind in the hair sort of thing), listening to whatever local oldies station may be available. Singing at the top of my lungs. You just can't be sad with the Temp's "Can't Get Next to You" blaring.

And thanks for the curly hair tips!

i have a good cry and/or moan session to a friend who doesn't make me see the good side of things... once i get the bad out - i have room for the good to seep back in...and in time, it usually does!

The poll appears to be 'down' at the moment, but a bike ride is definitely good. Any sort of physical exercise is good. Good music is good...
Anything in the great outdoors is good - just being in God's Great Creation.... Also, for me personally anything where I can serve others in some sort of volunteer capacity also gives me tremendous joy.

I love that Audio Adrenaline song "Get Down"... it's all about how when you get down, how God just pulls you right back up, and how cool that is. (It's a catchy tune too... love Audio Adrenaline... )

thanks for stopping by my blog. I want your beach cruiser! It's sooo cute.
Also - I need to meet your snarky sister so I can crash on her floor. :P

I am planning to go to the bloggess's pre blogher party and possibly the cocktail party - but don't plan on staying for actual blogher. :)

it's so funny that you say this, I was just talking to my friend Patty of mydailygoddess.blogspot.com and we were thinking about doing some sort of online workshop.

We used to do an irl workshop called We: women empowered through reflection and the arts, and we miss it.

Something about the community and the talking and the reflection and the art projects really went beyond the usual 'feel good for now' stuff we often do.

Rowena: That sounds fantastic! I found Daily Goddess on your blog. I've been checking in quite often. I like her recent topics on doubt and questioning. I think a WE project is finding some energy...

I have to DO something. Anything. Anything to feel as if I'm accomplishing something.

Or, a quiet cup of coffee and a trashy novel.

Well I can't actually ride a bike (and yes, I managed to have something resembling a happy childhood in spite of this fact) but find that a good dance-and-sing to your favourite songs (making sure the door is firmly shut) is good when I need perking up.

is that really your bike? wow, me likey. where'd you get it?
usually when i'm feeling most down is after a "spat" with the hubby...most of the time i can't leave because i've got to watch my kiddies, so i think i usually read or talk to someone on the phone. if i can go somewhere i go on a drive, but i'd really like to try the bike ride thing, especially on a bike like that!

Yes, that is my bike. I always wanted a bike like that when I was a kid. I finally got it for myself a year and a half ago. I LOVE IT! I can't help but ride with my arms out to the side when I'm riding down the coast... aaaahhhh

Makes everything all better...

For me, it's painting, painting, painting....with some soul music (and a little soul food). Painting helps me create something beautiful to replace the blah that I am feeling!

i make a cup of chai. sit outdoors if weather permits. take a stroll down by the river. read my bible. call a friend. journal. sometimes cry. make my baby laugh.....that always restores a bit of joy.

I find spending time outside restores me and inhaling copious amounts of hard to identify foods like "bananas" in a bag, licorice, gummies, AirHeads...oh ya, that's really restoring but then I get all messed up in my system and groaon a lot. That's not good for anyone!

and typically flowers and walks help me capture the light. and as always the ocean, but i am landlocked.
